Zcash Enters Top 10 as NU7 Vote Backs 25-Second Blocks

Short answer: On September 17, 2026, Zcash (ZEC) rose roughly 15–20% in a day to about $1,390 and entered the top 10 cryptocurrencies by market capitalization, at around $23 billion. The rally followed a Zcash holder vote in which 99.9% backed cutting block times from 75 to 25 seconds and 98.9% chose to keep Bitcoin-style halvings, plus a new Ledger app for shielded transactions.

What happened

While Bitcoin gained only about 1% on September 17, Zcash climbed as high as roughly $1,388, according to market data cited by Bitcoin.com News, lifting its market value to about $23.2 billion and pushing it into the top 10. The wider privacy-coin category rose more than 7% to around $52 billion by that outlet's count, with Dash up about 10%, while Monero (XMR) slipped.

The trigger was the result of a coinholder vote on NU7, Zcash's next network upgrade. Voting closed on September 14 at 19:00 UTC, using a snapshot of balances at block 3,459,350 taken on August 24. About 2.4 million ZEC took part out of roughly 3.6 million eligible, well above the 1 million ZEC needed for the result to count.

Holders also backed disabling transactions tied to Sprout, Zcash's original and long-obsolete privacy pool. Only shielded ZEC could vote, and ballots were encrypted and split before counting, so the tally did not reveal who voted or how much they held.

What the NU7 vote changes for Zcash

Zcash is a proof-of-work cryptocurrency, launched in 2016, that lets users send fully encrypted, "shielded" transactions using zero-knowledge proofs. NU7 is designed to make it faster without changing its monetary rules.

  • Faster confirmations: 25-second blocks mean a payment gets its first confirmation about three times sooner than today.
  • Same supply: the 21 million ZEC cap stays. The per-block reward is scaled down to match the shorter interval, so daily issuance is unchanged.
  • Halvings stay: holders rejected a smoother issuance curve; the last halving took place in November 2024.

The vote is a mandate, not a switch. Developers still have to implement, test and ship the chosen features, and an activation block height for NU7 has not been set.

Why Zcash is rallying now

The vote landed on a market already primed for privacy assets. ZEC traded below $50 about a year ago and has risen more than twentyfold since. Several threads came together:

  1. Self-custody for shielded funds. Ledger released a dedicated Zcash Shielded app for its Nano S Plus, Stax and Flex devices, so users can sign private transactions while keeping keys offline.
  2. Institutional access. Grayscale's Zcash product, ticker ZCSH, began trading on NYSE Arca on August 25, giving brokerage clients exposure without handling keys.
  3. Visible backers. Paradigm co-founder Matt Huang praised Zcash's mix of coin voting and other governance and said the firm holds ZEC.
  4. Less regulatory overhang. In January, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission closed its review of the Zcash Foundation without recommending enforcement.

Leverage has amplified the move. Short sellers have been repeatedly squeezed, and analysts have noted that on-chain privacy usage is growing more slowly than the price, a sign the rally is driven largely by capital flows.

What it means for you

A top-10 privacy coin is a notable shift, but it brings specific risks worth checking before you buy, sell or swap ZEC.

  • Volatility cuts both ways. A 20% daily rise on leveraged positioning can reverse just as quickly; size positions accordingly.
  • Transparent vs shielded addresses. Zcash has both. Exchanges and swap services usually pay out to transparent (t-) addresses; move funds into a shielded wallet yourself if privacy is the goal.
  • Listing risk. Some exchanges restrict privacy coins, and EU anti-money-laundering rules will bar regulated crypto providers from handling anonymity-enhancing coins from July 2027.
  • Upgrade timing. When NU7 activates, check that your wallet and any service you use have updated before you transact around the fork.

Key takeaways

  • ZEC rose to about $1,390 on September 17, 2026, and entered the top 10 by market cap at around $23 billion.
  • About 2.4 million ZEC voted; 99.9% backed 25-second blocks and 98.9% kept halvings.
  • The 21 million supply cap and daily issuance do not change.
  • A Ledger shielded app and Grayscale's ZCSH product widened access to the coin.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Zcash going up?

ZEC jumped after holders approved the NU7 upgrade plan with 25-second blocks and unchanged halvings, alongside a new Ledger app for shielded transactions and growing institutional access through Grayscale's ZCSH product. Short squeezes on leveraged positions amplified the move.

Does Zcash NU7 change the ZEC supply?

No. The maximum supply stays at 21 million ZEC, and the per-block reward is reduced in proportion to the shorter block time, so the number of new coins per day stays the same.

When will Zcash switch to 25-second blocks?

No date has been set. The September 2026 vote gave developers a mandate, but the change still has to be implemented and tested, and an activation block height for NU7 will be announced separately.
